ULTRA WINS £9M RAIL POWER EQUIPMENT CONTRACT

Ultra announces that its PMES business, based in Rugeley, Staffordshire, has been awarded a contract worth in excess of £9 million for its specialist trackside electrical power equipment for the upgrade to the East London Line which will become part of London’s new overground rail network. The contract has been awarded to Ultra by Balfour Beatty-Carillion Joint Venture (BB-CJV).

The equipment will be delivered and installed over a two year period commencing in 2008 and is part of the Transport for London (TfL) £10 billion upgrade and extension programme for the East London Line which will be extended to Highbury & Islington in north London and to Crystal Palace and West Croydon in south London. The East London Line will provide a rapid, reliable metro-style service using air-conditioned, accessible trains. There are also plans to extend the line west from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction.

The overhaul and extension to the East London Line is part of the larger urban regeneration programme for east London and the improvement of London’s transport infrastructure in preparation for the 2012 Olympics. By joining together the North and East London Lines ahead of the 2012 Games, London will create a new rail artery around the city serving 20 London boroughs.

Ultra’s scope of work under this contract includes the design, supply, installation and pre-commissioning of three new traction power substations at Hoxton, Shadwell and Canal Junction.

Douglas Caster, Chief Executive of Ultra, commented:
“Ultra is pleased to contribute to the improvement programme for London’s transport infrastructure ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games. Ultra has innovative solutions to the challenge of upgrading trackside power supplies in congested urban locations such as these three sites.”
